This holiday to me has become less like an all-out dash and grab for angpaos/goodies/drinks, and more like an oppotunity to see friends and relatives and say hello, and catch up with whats happened in their lives, and so that we do not loose contact with them in our reality. People are busy working all year round, and weekends are already too short for ourselves and our immediately kin. No surprise that we do not routinely visit these people in our overly hectic schedules. Therefore we invented the chinese new year tradition of visiting! How clever. The true and beautiful purpose of CNY is for us to show that we still remember and care for each other, despite not having met the past year.
