Time’s awasting

27 June 2007

So little time, so much to do. Have to stop spending precious hours wandering aimlessly through cyberspace or glued to the tubes. Much is to achieved in life and only those who work for it are going to get it. (bar the underprivileged elite)

War

Bush and bin Laden are really on the same side: the side of faith and violence against the side of reason and discussion. Both have implacable faith that they are right and the other is evil. Each believes that when he dies he is going to heaven. Each believes that if he could kill the other, his path to paradise in the next world would be even swifter. The delusional “next world” is welcome to both of them. This world would be a much better place without either of them.

Origins of Darlie

17 June 2007

Hong Kong’s Hazel & Hawley Chemical Co. would probably still be hawking Darkie toothpaste had the company not been acquired by Colgate. The Darkie brand’s Al Jolson-inspired logo, a grinning caricature in blackface and a top hat, was as offensive as its name. Colgate bought the company in 1985, and then ditched the logo and changed the product’s name to Darlie after US civil rights groups protested. However, the Cantonese name – Haak Yahn Nga Gou [黑人牙膏] (Black Man Toothpaste) – remains.

Carbon Neutral

14 June 2007

flower
Feel free to use this jpg i made.

To be ‘Carbon Neutral’ means to calculate the amount of greenhouse gas emissions your life creates, and paying to reduce the equivalent emissions from entering the atmosphere somewhere else through the planting of trees, methane combustion or other energy renewable and conservation projects. This is equivalent to emissions trading, but without the strict regulations and legalities. Companies and people who wish to combat the degradation in the earth’s atmosphere voluntarily purchase Carbon Offsets as there are no laws mandating it.

The average person produces 2.5tonnes of CO2 yearly while an adult tree only absorbs 22kg of CO2 annually. Therefore it’ll take a hundred trees to balance one person’s emission.

Singapore currently has no campaign or movement encouraging corporate and public entities or individuals to go Carbon Neutral. So spread the word.

Calculate how much carbon you are generating HERE.

As such, i’m putting my plant up for sponsorship to act as a carbon offset for whoever wants to move towards achieving Carbon Neutral status.
